Four New Vehicles Add to Dominion Virginia Power’s Fleet

Toyota PriusThe largest power producer in the nation, the Dominion Virginia Power, adds two more plug-in electric-hybrid cars and two hybrid-powered bucket-trucks to its fleet of EVs to be tested.

Two Toyota Prius units were converted as hybrid cars running on a Hymotion L5 Plug-in Conversion Module designed by A123Systems. The module nestles nanophosphate Li-ion batteries which saves up on up to 100mpg of fuel consumption.

The hybrid Prius units can be electrically assisted for an average of 30 to 40 miles. These hybrid cars can be recharged for a short five hours through any 110V electric outlet.

The Hymotion L5 Plug-in Conversion Module by A123Systems cuts down the greenhouse gas of these hybrid Prius units by at least 50% compared to conventional Prius units. This is approximately 80% less compared to regular sedans. Further experiments and data collection will be done by the Department of Energy National Laboratories in Idaho.

Tazzari Zero NEV specs revealed at Bologna International Motor Show

tazzari zeroThe Italian based car manufacturer had just revealed Tazzari Zero, a “neighborhood electric vehicle” or NEV and will be out in the American market in no later than December 2009. The NEV was unveiled at the international motor show in Bologna.

Tazzari Zero NEV is a vehicle that is revved up with a lithium ion battery. It is capable of giving out an amazing driving range of 88 miles (141 km) with just one charge. Zero NEV is also created to reach a magnanimous speed of 56 miles per hour or 90 km/hr, but according to Tazzari, they will limit the speed up to 25-45 miles per hour (40-72 km/hr). This is due to the reason that some states bear limitations on speed in their jurisdiction on a vehicle like Zero NEV.

DOE Researchers Disclose Genome of Sorghum

SorghumScientists from the Department of Energy of the United States, Joint Genome Institute, and other partner sectors have released the genome of sorghum which is a plant that has a very excellent potential to be a bioenergy crop.

The unlocking of the sequence of the genome will allow experts to enhance and capitalize on sorghum’s potential not only as food or feed but as well as a source of biofuel.

Sorghum is next to corn as an excellent source of biofuel in the United States. The viability of sorghum is attributed to its resistance to drought and high productivity. One bushel of sorghum produces the same amount of biofuel as corn but requiring less water in the process.

Experts foresee the higher demand for sorghum as development of cellulosic biofuel production moves forward.

Sorghum is only the second grass genome that was completely sequenced to date after rice. Its structure is composed of 730 million nucleotides and is larger by as much as 75% than rice.

The unlocking of the genome of the sorghum may lead to the sequencing of other plants which may also have a high potential to be bioenergy crops.

Honda Motors have decided to up investments in Bio-Ethanol and have put their money where their mouth is by building a new “research and development facility to bring about the creation and the practical use of bioethanol technology made from cellulosic materials by using the leaves and stems of plants.”

Honda is one of the bigger players in the Bio-Ethanol R&D market, so this really is extremely exciting news for people hoping to see Bio-Ethanol driven cars become mainstream in the next decade.

“The planned facility, Honda R&D Co., Ltd. Fundamental Technology Research Center, will be constructed within Kazusa Akademia Park located in Kisarazu, Chiba. The car company is intending to construct a single building measuring 1,050 m2 for a research facility on a 5,000 m2 lot. EU Steps in to Change Germany’s Biofuel Law

Bio FuelThe European Union’s latest action is bound to initiate some changes on Germany’s new biofuel law. This new ruling excludes soy bean oil-based fuel from Germany’s mandates and incentives. This was reported by the US Department of Agriculture (Foreign Agricultural Service). However, the report also indicates that Germany will continue excluding biofuels that are already receiving support from other countries.

To date, Germany is the biggest biodiesel producer in the EU. In 2007 alone, Germany produced 2.890 million tones. This is a far cry from France’s 0.872 million tones, which came in second. This data is from the European Diesel Board.

It was downhill from there, though, as Germany’s biodiesel consumption fell by a significant 0.7 million tones last year. They’re projecting further drops by up to 10 million tones compared to 2007’s figures. According to UFOP, the German oilseeds association, these drops are caused by the huge taxes placed on biofuel in general.

Better Place Aims for EVs for All, Pay for the Miles

Better PlaceBetter Place is a California based brainchild of Shai Agassi founded in 2007. It may be one of the companies in the world which has the most innovative visions for electric cars. The company wants to make electric cars as affordable as the combustion engine vehicles and vary its range to fit the lifestyles of different individuals.

Number one on the vision list of Better Place is to have charging stations where people would shop, dine, or work so electric cars can be charged for 100 miles and more of capacity. The company also envisions exchange stations where batteries can be swapped for new ones in a snap of a finger.

Better Place foresees lithium ion battery prices to drop in the future basing on economies of scale. These batteries will form part of the company’s Electric Recharge Grid that will cover regions or even a country.

Driving an electric vehicle will be like owning a mobile phone. It will be based on subscriptions. Minutes on phones will be like miles on the road for an EV. With higher plans, come some perks. A free phone? Maybe a free EV.
